Its 10 million residents make Los Angeles County the nation’s largest. An entity that big needs a CEO, the County Board of Supervisors decided. In 2007 L.A. County native William Fujioka was appointed the County’s first CEO.

Fujioka has direct managerial responsibility for most of the County’s departments and operations, including public safety, health and social services, municipal services and parks and recreation. That entails riding herd over a staff of 90,000 and keeping an eye on a $22 billion budget.

Fujioka’s employment with the County began in 1978. During the next 21 years he worked as an examinations analyst, Civil Service appeals analyst, personnel officer, and administrator in the Department of Health Services, including CEO of High Desert Hospital/Antelope Valley Cluster. In 1997 he left to become general manager of the Personnel Department for the City of Los Angeles. In August 1999 he was promoted to Los Angeles City Administrative Officer. After eight years in that job he retired. After a brief retirement, he was appointed by the Los Angeles County’s Board of Supervisors as the first Chief Executive Officer in July 2007.

Fujioka was born in Los Angeles County. William has a Bachelor of Arts in Sociology (Social Research), University of California, Santa Cruz, 1970-1974, and graduated Cum Laude. He is married to Darlene Kuba and has one son (Jason, age 17).
